BTHCP 001: Do You Know Chiropractic’s BIG Idea?

The information you are about to hear is for education purposes only.  Please consult your doctor before attempting to implement anything covered in the following episode.

In this podcast you will learn:

  1. What is Chiropractic’s Big idea
  2. The Big Idea’s role in optimizing the health & wellness of you and your family
  3. Why focusing on symptoms does not lead to health & wellness

Summary:

The Big idea is really quite simple:

There is a power within our body and an intelligence within our body that has been present from the moment we were conceived and is working non-stop 24hr/day, 356days/year, without taking a single moment off, EVER until the day we die!  Some call this inborn intelligence, we call it INNATE intelligence.

INNATE intelligence is transmitted to every cell and tissue in our body through our Nervous System.  Our nervous system IS programmed for health and wellness.  We are self-healing, self-regulating organisms!  A fully functioning nervous system and an optimal spine are fundamental requirements for optimal health, optimal healing and proper regulation.  A vertebra (spinal bone) that is out of proper alignment or that is not moving properly is capable of causing dis-ease(abnormal function) by interfering with the self-regulating self-healing function of the nervous system.  A vertebra or spinal bone that is out of proper alignment or that is not moving properly is caused a vertebral subluxation.  A vertebral subluxation, when removed through the application of a specific chiropractic adjustment will improve the body’s self-healing, self-regulating function and therefore decrease dis-ease.

Let’s discuss this further

Did you know that the nervous system is the Master control system of our entire body?  Did you know, that it is the first major system to begin forming in the developing embryo?  As I mentioned above, our NS is the master control system of the entire body.  It is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.  The brain and spinal cord are considered our central nervous system, while the nerves that run from the spinal cord, out to the rest of our body is considered our peripheral nervous system.  The brain controls and regulates the function of not only all of our organs and glands but also controls and regulates the function of every one of our 70 trillion cells!  Each one of those 70 trillion cells is capable of producing over 100,000 functions per second!  It is nothing short of miraculous how our bodies work each and every day.

Let’s talk a minute about science.  Many people falsely belief that science has figured all of this stuff out.  Now while it is true, that today we know more than we ever have about the body.  Did you know, that it is estimated that even with everything we know about the body today, we still only know less than 10% of how the body actually works.  For example, take developmental biology which is the study of how cells differentiate as the embryo is developing into a fetus and eventually a self-sustaining living breathing human being.  Scientists know at what day in the developmental process things such as the nervous system begins to form.  They know on what day the heart begins to beat, they know what genes code the information to make those tissue but they cannot explain what force or power was actually responsible for making that action happen on that actual day.  That unexplained force or power is INNATE intelligence.

When it comes to our brains function, most of us only focus on our conscious or educated mind.  This involves what we are thinking about, choosing to say, do etc.  But the bulk of our brain’s function occurs on the subconscious mind.  Think about it.  All of the amazing things are brains are doing every second of every day, much like INNATE intelligence, without taking a second off…EVER!  We never have to think about how many times per minute we should be breathing, we never have to calculate what our heart rate should be.  No matter what we eat, we never have to concentrate on what digestive enzymes we need to secrete, our subconscious brain and nervous system handles all of it!

Now, let us think about health and healing.  Think of all of the cuts, bruises, scraps, and broken bones you or your family members have had.  Not once, did you ever have to download an app or read a book on how to heal such things.  Yes, the orthopedic surgeon may have had to set the bone in the appropriate position after a break, but it was your own body that stimulated the osteoblasts to migrate to the site of damage and actually build new bone, healing that tissue.  What about colds and flus and other illness?  Again, thank god we have never had to concentrate on what antibodies we need to make or read a book on how to build the appropriate immune cells for each infection.  Now there may be times when drugs were used that may have helped to suppress symptoms or aided in killing bacteria, but it was still your own body that actually healed the inflamed sinus or throat tissue.   Because the brain and nervous system are responsible for all health healing and because the brain is the master controller of the nervous system and that the brain transmits its signals through the spinal cord, through the peripheral nerves until the target tissue/cells are finally reached, it can be said that all health comes from ABOVE-DOWN, INSIDE-OUT.

Think of a properly functioning nervous system as a closed safety pin.  The brain needs a steady flow of feedback from our cells, tissues, organs and glands to then be able to make the best decisions about what the body needs to then do to be able to stay in balance.  This feedback is needed to determine what needs to be healed, what needs to be repaired so forth and so on.  This is where the spine comes in.  An optimal spine, not only protects the spinal cord and incoming nerves but also should allow us a great deal of motion.  When vertebral subluxation is present, it causes abnormal movement patterns in the spine which produces stress on the nearby nerves and in some cases increased stress on the spinal cord itself.  The stress placed on the nervous tissue can be either chemical, from inflammation or mechanical pressure from the fluid of inflammation or directly from the vertebra that is out of alignment.  This is a not a little problem, in fact this is a BIG problem.  Recent research has shown that pressure on a nerve equal to the weight of a quarter can shut a nerve’s function down by as much as 60%!  This means that one subluxation can have a profound effect on a person’s ability to self-heal and self-regulate!  A vertebral subluxation opens up the safety pin, literally creating a break in the brain-body connection.  A specific chiropractic adjustment that removes a vertebral subluxation closes the safety pin, therefore improving nervous system function and restoring the brain-body connection.  This is why it is critical for everyone to have their spine routinely checked for vertebral subluxation!

Now, let us talk for a minute about conventional medicine.  You now know that the body heals from ABOVE-DOWN, INSIDE-OUT.   Conventional medicine on the other hand is constantly looking for a magic pill, potion or lotion in an attempt to “cure” the body form the outside-in.  Outside-in thinking will never work long term, simply because it is not congruent with how the body actually works.  The only winner in a system that is focused on outside-in thinking is big pharma.  Now there is a time when drugs and surgery are indicated, mainly significant trauma where life-threatening injuries are present.  Also, when a person becomes overwhelmed with an acute bout of severe illness and they are incapable of overcoming it on their own.  However, for the vast majority of health challenges faced by most, especially virtually all chronic disease, opting for out-side in treatments will only result in being put on numerous drugs, most of which are designed to be taken for life and sadly many of which are capable of producing side effects much worse than the condition they are being taken to treat!

Okay, we covered A LOT in that expanded discussion.  In wrapping things up today, let’s review the BIG idea one more time;

A fully functioning nervous system and an optimal spine is a fundamental requirement for optimal health, optimal healing and proper regulation.  A vertebra (spinal bone) that is out of proper alignment or that is not moving properly is capable of causing dis-ease by interfering with the self-regulating self-healing function of the nervous system.  A vertebra or spinal bone that is out of proper alignment or that is not moving properly is caused a vertebral subluxation.  A vertebral subluxation, when removed the application of a specific chiropractic adjustment will improve the body’s self-healing, self-regulating function and therefore decrease dis-ease.

That my friend’s is Chiropractic’s BIG idea!  Now that you know this important information you will understand why every man, woman and child deserves to have their spines and nervous systems properly maintained from the minute they are born until the day they die.  This information also explains why so many different health challenges have responded to chiropractic care, far beyond the obvious back pain and neck pain.  For example; Did you know, that infantile colic and childhood asthma typically respond very well to chiropractic care?  Some of the things we hear amost every day in our clinic from practice members that begin a course of chiropractic care include better sleep quality, higher energy levels, better digestion, less headaches, the list literally goes on and on!

In closing, I hope this discussion has expanded your thoughts on true health, healing and wellness and on the importance of having your spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractic doc tor.
